Job Description: Development Director

Position: Full-Time, Salaried


Description: Since 2017, the Rural Utah Project (RUP) has sought to engage voters across rural Utah. This includes voter registration, assigning valid voting addresses, and using groundbreaking and grassroots technology to remove barriers between rural voters and the ballot.


The Development Director will work to grow the organization’s existing donor base, seek new opportunities to expand RUP’s funding, and maintain relationships with existing donors and financial stakeholders in the conservation space. The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director to create a system of donor prospecting and follow up that increases the overall reach of the organization into new and existing spaces.


The Development Director will seek to expand the Rural Utah Project major giving program, and work with the Communications Director to grow the organization’s small dollar donor base. With the creation of the affiliated 501(c)(3), the Rural Utah Project Education Fund, the Development Director will seek to create and execute an aggressive grant program.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with the Executive Director to set program goals for RUP’s fundraising efforts. This includes goals for major giving, RUP’s annual fund, grants, and community events

  • Manage the organization’s progress to fundraising goals

  • Manage fundraising goals and giving between RUP’s two organizational bodies, the 501(c)(4) and the 501(c)(3) Education Fund

  • Manage and cultivate relationships with RUP’s existing donors

  • Develop systems and manage identification processes for new donors and supporters, with an emphasis on RUP’s major giving program (gifts above $2,500)

  • Work with Executive Director to implement time management systems for call time and donor cultivation for ED and associated staff

  • Identify and execute grant program for the 501(c)(3) Education Fund

  • Work with Communications Director on schedule, structure, and content for direct mail program and digital fundraising program

  • Manage RUP’s constituent relationship managers and databases to ensure that data is stored effectively and that donors are thanked adequately for their contributions

  • Work with and build relationships with partner organizations to organize RUP supporter events and build collaboration

  • Check in with field team to ensure deadlines are being met for grant requirements and accountability to finding commitments is being upheld

  • Work with RUP board on donor outreach, prospecting, and gifts


Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to meet tight and competing deadlines, and the ability to manage many tasks simultaneously

  • Working knowledge of political campaign structure and/or voter registration and election processes

  • At least three years of experience in nonprofit or political fundraising

  • Familiarity with donor management technology

  • Ability to work occasional irregular hours, including occasional nights and weekends


Salary and Benefits: The salary range for this position is $48,000 - $53,000. This is a full- time, salaried position, and includes healthcare, dental, retirement, and paid vacation and sick time.
